Do we really have any reason to celebrate?

Please pardon this rather unusual tirade but I’m tired of hearing all the whining and complaining. Read this forwarded email that I received from a friend last week to understand why. I’ve paraphrased it here.

‘If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.’

‘And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity. ‘

Now I’m not sure when this email was first sent or how accurate those stats actually are, but you get the point.

Yes, we’ve lost jobs and houses to foreclosure and we’re all being extra careful about ordering takeout instead of cooking at home.

But when I look at the faces of the people around me, my family, my friends, my co-workers, even the sweet gentleman who bags my groceries, I find many reasons to be grateful and to give thanks.

I’ve decided that I’m going without TV news for the next few weeks. I’ll still get my news through the web but I’ll be able to pick and choose without being forced to listen and watch the doom and gloom predictions of all the pundits.
