Publishing Your Children’s Books and Stories

On a recent trip to my parents’ home I had a serendipitous discovery! At the back of my old desk I discovered a note book of short stories written when I was probably around 9 years old, complete with my childish handwriting and color-pencil illustrations. It made my day! I spent a delicious afternoon pouring over the stories and laughing out loud at my attempts at mystery and humor. It made me realize how important creative expression is to a child.
I was quite excited today when I came across this post about sites that allow children to have their stories published both online and in print via competitions etc. The blog post reviews some well-known sites like Highlights for Children and Cricket Magazine but also some that I had never heard of before like StoneSoup and Zuzu.
If your child is a prolific writer you might also consider a site like blurb that allows you to upload an entire book and then have each one published for as little as $5 per copy!
There are also high quality magazine publishing websites like Magcloud and Spotbit that allow you to print or create downloadable pdf’s. These might be a great way to publish the work of a group of students from an after school club, summer camp or school. They are free, feature some very-professional looking templates and seem to be fairly easy to use (with some adult supervision). I can’t think of a better way to encourage a child to continue writing and expressing themselves - Happy Publishing!
