Letters - Leaving a legacy through paper and pen

August 9th, 2009 | by Suki |

My grandfather passed away in February of this year. Unable to make it for his funeral, I dug up some old letters that he had sent me a few years ago, and sat down to read them. I moved my finger under each line and imagined him sitting at his desk thoughtfully forming each word in the black gel ink pen that he loved. Of all the physical things my grandfather gave me, I count his letters as the most precious. This morning I found the following video via a post titled TED Talks Dymistified. The speaker’s words resonated with me. I write countless emails a day and some of them hopefully capture the emotion that I’m trying to convey. But there’s something to be said about handwriting something and sticking it in the mail that electronic communication can’t replace. So here’s to the lost art of writing letters…and to those whose legacy continue to live through them.
