Using Awards in Education
Giving out awards for any reason is a great way to make people feel appreciated and to help them see that they are making a difference. It doesn't matter if it's in the workplace, at home, in the community, or even in education. Especially in education, it's important to give students a reason and a drive to succeed; using awards and positive recognition is a great way to do just that. At a young age, children are excited to be in school. They thirst for knowledge and want to learn, because it is new and exciting. As the years pass, however, you might find some students becoming more lethargic or apathetic about education because they aren't feeling appreciated or knowing how important it really is to succeed in school.
Children who aren't as book smart as others should be a prime target for these awards and certificates. Awarding the smart kids only reinforces the group thinking that they're better than those who aren't as smart; in reality, the students who don't get straight A's or excel at everything should be rewarded for things that they do succeed in, so that they feel appreciated and don't give up on themselves. By providing these students with awards, you'll be better able to make them realize that they do matter to you, and that they can make a difference, even if they can't get the best grades in the class.
Try creating a goal or set of goals that isn't based on grades or intelligence. Take the time to recognize leadership in the classroom, or other occurrences that aren't related to how smart your students are. For example, if you have students who always strive to do their best, whether they get A's or C's, you'll be able to foster a positive environment, which will make the students more apt to excel because they feel just as important as the students who are smarter and receive better grades.
It's not always about who gets the best grades in education. Most schools and teachers do focus on that, but by doing so, you're alienating all the students that might be successful in other areas because they aren't at the top of their class. Giving free, printable awards to students for something other than grades is a good way to give them the opportunity to shine. By creating some sort of goal that everyone can reach, you'll be giving the underdogs a chance to get their recognition for everything that they do, and not just rewarding the smart kids again.
