How to Make Your Own Clip Art

July 9th, 2009 | by admin |

If you’re in need of clip art but can’t find just the right drawing for your project, consider creating your own. Here are a few simple steps for creating your own clip art.

To begin, you’ll need: pencil, eraser, tracing paper, transfer paper, plain white paper, fine-tipped black pen (such as a Sharpie Fine or Ultra-Fine Point), and an image you want to use. You can find the tracing and transfer paper at most arts and crafts stores.

Choose a image to print

1. Find a picture, photo, or image of the object you want to use. Websites such as www.morguefile.com offer royalty-free images for personal use. If using an image from the web, print the image. The size of the image doesn’t matter as long as it can fit on a standard sheet of paper. You can resize your artwork later.

2. Place a piece of tracing paper over the image. Trace the image, adding as little or as much detail as you want for your clip art. For example, if you were drawing a car, you may want just the outline, or you might want to add in the details of the doors, windows, and mirror.

3. When you’re satisfied with your drawing, transfer it to a piece of plain white paper. To do this, place a piece of transfer paper (shiny side down) on top of the white paper, then place your drawing on top of the transfer paper. Retrace the lines you drew. The image is now on your white paper.

4. Use your pen to re-trace the drawing in ink on your white paper.

5. Now you can resize your artwork. You can use a copier to reduce or enlarge the image to the desired size, or you can scan the image into your computer and resize it with a computer application.

Congratulations — you’ve created your own clipart, with no drawing skills required!
